Savoring Summer

August 9, 2011

By Brianne Harrison Moore

Jersey fresh produce is pouring in from the Garden State’s fields, and farmers’ markets throughout New Jersey are celebrating the abundance and demonstrating how to make the most of it.

On August 10 from 2-7 p.m. it’s Celebrity Chef Day at the South Orange Farmers’ Market on Sloan Street. Nabil Wah, a master mozzarella maker and chef from Eden Marketplace will demonstrate his skills and show marketgoers how to make the most of fresh, local foods. Learn how to make your own mozzarella, collect some recipes to use with your market purchases, and sample tomato and mozzarella salad.

From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Margate Farmers’ Market will celebrate Jersey Tomato Day. Enjoy a tomato tasting and learn more about the many varieties the Garden State produces, courtesy of representatives from Rutgers University.

Both Burlington Farmers’ Market and Ramsey Farmers’ Market are celebrating peaches this weekend. Burlington’s market, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 13, will have peach-inspired ice cream, salsa, and baked goods for sale, and shoppers can learn more about peach baking and preserving techniques. South Jersey Hot Chefs will present a cooking class, Master Gardeners will have a presentation, and there’ll be kids’ activities and live music as well. The Ramsey Farmers’ Market on August 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will feature peachy chef tastings, raffles, music, and kids’ activities.

On August 20, join the Heirloom Tasting and People’s Choice Awards at the Chatham Farmers’ Market. Taste some delicious heirloom tomatoes and vote for your favorite!

Those shoppers who can’t eat all they bring home (or grow themselves) might want to check out Saving Summer in a Jar: Tasty Pickles on August 20 at Back to Nature Home & Garden in Basking Ridge. Learn how to turn a variety of fresh vegetables into tart and tasty side dishes for your favorite sandwiches or burgers. The class runs from 10-11:30 and is $20. To register, click here.
