Spirit of Hope

July 8, 2011

By Brianne Harrison Moore

Can you imagine being told that you’re unlovable? That you’re a lost cause, not worth the time and effort? Tragically, these are the sorts of things people say about thousands of animals who come through shelters every year. While some are lucky and find homes, others are deemed “unadoptable” and euthanized.

That could have been the fate of Hope, a 10-month-old lab mix puppy who’d been severely abused and abandoned, but luckily she was brought to LuLu’s Rescue, an all-volunteer rescue organization based in Point Pleasant, PA. Although Hope (who was named by the shelter) seemed like she’d be a difficult case, considering her extensive injuries and obviously traumatic past, LuLu’s took her in, and a volunteer fostered her in their home. There, she recovered beautifully, and she was eventually adopted and has a happy home with the Crew family.

In honor of this plucky pup, LuLu’s will present its first Sprit of Hope Award at its Eat, Bark, Bid fundraiser at Rago Arts and Auction Center in Lambertville on July 16. The first recipients of the award will be Hope’s new parents, John and Eileen Crew of Bethlehem Township. The award will be given every year to an individual or group who exemplifies Lulu’s mission of compassion, care, empathy, and faithful stewardship, according to Michele Armstrong, executive director of LuLu’s.

In addition to the presentation of the award, Eat, Bark, Bid will feature a farm-to-table dinner along with live and silent auctions featuring one hundred works by various artists. Proceeds from the event will benefit LuLu’s spay and neuter program. Tickets are $150 each and can be purchased at lulusrescue.com.
