Asparagus, Eggs, & NJ: Perfect Together

There was a time when eggs and asparagus constituted two of South Jersey’s biggest farm products. In fact, the asparagus breeding program that continues to this day at Rutgers University developed what are now the two most widely grown asparagus cultivars in the country: Jersey Knight and Jersey Giant. And NJ still ranks fourth nationally in asparagus production, behind the much larger states of California, Michigan, and Washington. Even so, chances are very good that if you buy asparagus from those states it is a Jersey cultivar.

So it is fitting that the tiny town of Greenwich in Cumberland County (population 847) still mounts a community-wide egg and asparagus breakfast every year during the height of asparagus season. About 700 people are expected to attend this year’s event, the 21st annual, on Sunday, May 22. It is, as always, a fundraiser for the Greenwich Volunteer Fire and Department, and is held at the Greenwich Fire Hall on Ye Greate Street.

Greenwich (which, btw, is pronounced GREEN-witch) is a beautifully preserved Colonial town on the Cohansey River. Greenwich even mounted its own tea burning party leading up to the Revolution.

For $10 ($5 for children under 12), breakfasters feast on all-you-can-eat fresh local asparagus, hollandaise sauce, scrambled eggs, baked ham, sausage, potatoes, juice, and coffee. Oh yes: and home-baked goods contributed by just about every family in town.
