Not So Clueless

May 6, 2011

By Brianne Harrison Moore

For me (and I imagine many other young women my age), Alicia Silverstone is best remembered as the fashionable and beauty-obsessed main character in Clueless. But Silverstone has gone far beyond the role of ditzy though well meaning blonde. Over the years, she’s become a vocal advocate for veganism, an author, an animal rights and environmental activist, and now the designer of cosmetics bags for EcoTools.

The bags—made of hemp and recycled PET—are lovely to look at, with their pastel watercolor-like flowers and embroidery. The brushes inside are both pretty and kind to the earth as well—they’re made from bamboo, recycled aluminum, and synthetic taklon bristles and are 100% cruelty free. I’ve become particularly attached to the brush set and bag, which keeps a useful collection of five brushes in place in an upper compartment, with plenty of room for your cosmetics in the section below. Perfect for travel!

EcoTools is just as committed to the environment as Silverstone is: The company is a member of 1% for the planet, an alliance of businesses that support environmental initiatives. Each member donates 1% of annual revenue to environmental causes (in EcoTools’s case, the donation goes to EarthShare, and the 1% of revenue from the sales of Silverstone’s collection goes to Wildlife Alliance).

EcoTools are available at most major drugstores and some grocery stores, including Wegmans and Whole Foods. Click here for a full list of places where you can buy them.
