Earth Day

April 19, 2011

By Brianne Harrison Moore

Every year since the 1970’s, we’ve set aside one day in April to pay homage to Mother Earth. As more people become interested in global warming and environmental stewardship, however, Earth Day has stretched beyond a single day. Here in New Jersey, at least, you can celebrate the earth for an entire weekend (and beyond) at a number of events throughout the state.

Start off at George Press Jewelers’ Recycle-To-Wear event on the 21. George himself will be on hand to demonstrate how to repurpose old jewelry and turn it into something new and fabulous. The winner of the “NJ Has Charm” contest will also be announced; the charm will be available for special order with a percent of the proceeds going to The Land Conservancy of New Jersey. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at George Press Jewelers, 74 South Livingston Ave., Livingston.

On Earth Day proper (April 22), Back to Nature Home & Garden, an ecologically inspired garden destination, will celebrate its grand opening. Back to Nature focuses on organic growing, local products, and community-based educational programs. Stop by, check out some of their products, and learn more about how to make your garden truly “green” this year. The event will run all day at their retail store at 3055 Valley Rd. in Basking Ridge. Perfect Christmas Tree Farm in Phillipsburg will host an Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The celebration aims to raise awareness of the benefits of reusing, recycling, and reducing waste and will include gardening information, planning instruction, and plenty of local non-profits. The event will be held at the farm, 999 US 22 in Phillipsburg. For more information, visit perfectchristmastree.com.

Too busy this weekend? Swing by Mendham Township Library on the 29 for their Earth Day Celebration from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Paint a flowerpot and plant some seeds or get crafty and create a masterpiece using recycled materials. Mendham Twp. Library is located at 2 West Main St. in Brookside.
