Shelter Me

October 1, 2010

by Brianne Harrison

It’s no secret that lots of animal shelters are struggling these days. When the economy’s bad, people are less likely to donate and more likely to give up their pets. If you’re an animal lover who’s been lucky enough to weather the economic storm, there are plenty of great events coming up that’ll allow you to show some support for the shelters who do so much while also having a little fun with your four-legged best friend.

Thinking of adding to your family? All Star Pet Rescue and Summit Animal Rescue are hosting a Pet Adoption/Pet Fair on October 2. Meet some of the cats and dogs who need homes and bring your questions for vet Dr. Gordon and dog behaviorist and trainer Monica Felsing. Entry is $5 for adults and $1 for children under 10. Proceeds benefit both shelters and the entry donation will be deducted for any approved application for adoption.

On October 9, the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals is hosting its first ever Blue Moon Bark Ball, a black tie optional gala for people and their pets, at Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch. Enjoy signature “Blue Muttini” cocktails, surf and turf dinner, dancing to the music of the Eddie Bruce Band, auctions, and a king and queen of the ball award. Proceeds from the gala will benefit New Jersey’s neediest animal rescues. Tickets are $200 per person, canine companions are free. For more information, visit

If you’re looking for something a little more laid back, Fido’s Festival runs October 9-10, and the Carnivale of the Dogs will be held on October 10. Both events will feature activities for families and pets, including giveaways, wellness presentations, vendors, dog trainers, and entertainment. Fido’s Festival will also have a Howl-o-ween Costume Contest and an Obsta-ghoul course. Visit for more information. Carnivale of the Dogs benefits Companion Animal Advocates; for more info, visit

Need a day of beauty? You’re in luck. Salon Rouge will be holding a Heads & Tails Fundraiser to benefit the Camden County Animal Shelter. Haircuts will be $40 for women and $18 for men. Other specials include $40 single color processes and $20 color glazes. Stop by, get prettied up, and meet some of the dogs from the shelter. For more information, visit
