Allergy Season

September 9, 2010

By Jennifer Chaky

I feel it already; it’s going to be a rough allergy season this fall. My daughter and I have been getting immunotherapy allergy shots for years now and lucky for us, combined with a vegan diet and other natural protocols, our allergies have for the most part been kept at bay. But it does seem that even with all these preventative measures, the allergy triggers are getting stronger and stronger. This is scary, because often that means people are put on stronger and stronger drugs.

Many well-meaning parents take their children to allergists who are quick to write-off a padful of prescriptions. Some doctors even put kids on preventative regimens of daily steroids to prevent asthma attacks, but these drugs often have side effects such as increased upper-respiratory infections. When I was a child my allergies were so bad and I had so many steroid injections that the doctors told my mother I may not be able to have children. That was enough for my mother to start looking for alternatives, which led me to the above-mentioned protocol of immunotherapy and a changed lifestyle that includes a vegan diet, daily juicing, detoxes, and using homemade, natural remedies the infrequent times that we need to.

Since it is beyond the scope of this blog post to go into the various protocols we use—and I am by no means a doctor offering medical advice—I will instead encourage anyone who suffers from any kind of allergies, or whose children do, to seek a doctor who is knowledgeable about building up the immune system to treat the cause of allergies instead of using drugs as the first tactic to fight the symptoms. From our experience drugs can be used as a crutch to make you comfortable as you transition to “alternative” treatments, but there is a way of overcoming allergies so that drugs are not so heavily relied upon—if they’re used at all.

Mindful Living NJ is sponsoring a FREE event at Respira Wellness Center in Berkeley Heights and the afternoon is packed full of informative seminars on how to achieve respiratory health with salt therapy, nutrition, yoga, reiki, and proper posture. For those suffering from allergies, this is a great opportunity to learn about less invasive ways to keep yourself healthy!
