Race for the Cures

September 7, 2010

By Brianne Harrison

Labor Day’s behind us, and crisp fall weather is right around the corner. It’s time to shake ourselves out of a heat-and-humidity-induced torpor and get moving again, and this weekend offers plenty of great opportunities to do just that.

On Saturday, bike enthusiasts can join in the Century for the Cure, an annual bike race through the scenic back roads of central New Jersey that raises money for The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Racers can go the full 100 miles or choose a 40-mile option. The race starts at 7 a.m. (registration begins at 6) at Camp Riverbend, 116 Hillcrest Rd., Warren. There are rest stops every 20 miles along the route, with food and beverages, and racers are treated to BBQ and swim afterwards. Visit centuryforthecure.com for more information.

If you’re more of a runner than a biker, there are two 5Ks on Sunday that might catch your interest. Lakeside Fitness Club is hosting a 5K and Fun Run starting at 9 a.m. to raise money for The Matthew Larson Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Join the 5K run or gather your family for a 1-mile Fun Run starting at 10 a.m. For more information, visit lakesidefitnessclub.com.

Benefiting the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (once again) is the High Speed Chase for the Cure 2010, a 5K run/3K walk which start at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Registration cutoff is Wednesday, September 8 at 4 p.m. so if you want to join in, register now! Visit cinjfoundation.org for more information.
