Paws for a Cause

August 17, 2010

Have pets and want to give back? Pack up Fido and head over to L’Oreal’s campus in Cranbury this Saturday for Because Your Dog is Worth it Too Day. The event, which is entering its seventh year, attracts thousands of dogs and their human companions and raises money for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure of Central and South Jersey.

The event started after L’Oreal’s New Jersey site lost two employees to breast cancer. Wanting to make a difference, co-workers dreamed up a fundraiser that would support two causes they could all get behind: breast cancer research and animal rescues. Because Your Dog is Worth it Too Day has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for SGK while also giving local animal shelters a chance to show off some of the wonderful pets available for adoption and to raise awareness of their shelter.

BYDIWIT Day kicks off at 9:45 and features a full day of canine-centric entertainment. Enter the Dog Trivia Contest, check out the NJ State Bone Stacking Contest or breed-specific races (including Bulldog, Dachshund, Pug, and mixed-breed), and enter your favorite pup in the costume contest. For the truly athletic, there’s the dog high jump competition, a dock-diving contest, and the 6th Annual NJ State puppy Limbo Championship.

Those in the mood for a more relaxing day can check out booksignings and photo sessions, meet representatives from more than 60 rescues and non-profits throughout the state, or even have messy pups professionally groomed throughout the day. Humans can enter raffles, join in games, and chow down on lemonade and fair food (100% of sales go to SGK). For hot dogs (and owners!), there will be misting tents and pools scattered throughout the fair.

Tickets can be purchased the day of the celebration for $10. The $25 special patron registration (which you have to complete ahead of time) gets you a special patron “doggie bag” filled with goodies for both pets and humans. Registration costs are tax deductible and 100% of the donation goes to SGK. For more information, visit
