The World is Your Gym

July 21, 2010

With these beautiful summer days upon us and the fall days ahead there is no better time to talk about outdoor fitness.  Training outdoors will bring your exercise routine to another level and rejuvenate your mind and soul.

All the cardio equipment in the gym (treadmills, elliptical, stairmasters, etc.) have buttons and ramps to increase the intensity, speed, and climb of the routine. When you step outside for a bike ride, run, or brisk walk mother nature and your environment are in control.  As you head out on your bike a head wind may force you to pound the pedals at a level you didn’t know you could handle.  As you turn the corner during a run there may be a steep hill waiting for you or just a gradual incline that you did not realize that particular road had when you were driving it in your car but surely sneaks up on your during your run.

If you know how to swim, head to the local pool and start doing some laps. It’s a great way to combine aerobic activity with resistance training in a joint-stress-free environment. Finally, head to the local park with benches and playgrounds and start training like a kid again.  Do some pushups in the grass, pull ups and dips on the jungle gym, and step-ups on a bench.  Bring some resistance bands and your training is only limited by your imagination.

Beside the great fitness you obtain training outdoors, you get the added benefit of fresh air, sunlight, and an overall feeling of wellness.
