Blues and Bagpipes

July 13, 2010

By Brianne Harrison

Celebrate the blues at Sickles Market this weekend—blueberries, that is. On Saturday, Sickles will host its 11th Annual Blues Festival, featuring face painting, blue balloons, and a blueberry pie-eating contest. The market will also showcase locally grown blueberries and blue Jersey products in its food market, gift department, and garden center, as well as demos and tastings and live blues music by local musician Chuck Lambert. All activities are free. The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. at Sickles Market, 1 Harrison Ave., Little Silver. Visit sicklesmarket.com for more info.

Looking for a more refined way to celebrate the season’s bounty? This weekend also features the first in the 2010 series of Sustenance on the Farm Dinners in the rolling pastures of Plaid Piper Farm in Branchville. Enjoy a tour of the farm led by farmers Paul Dalrymple and Eileen Griffiths, followed by a six-course farm-to-table dinner prepared by chef Joseph Cerniglia of Campania Restaurant and pastry chef Jessica Marotta. Food used in the dinner will be sourced from Plaid Piper Farm and other food artisans located nearby. Each course will be paired with sustainable wines from Ruca Malen Estate in Mendoza, Argentina. Bagpipers will play traditional airs on the hillside. Proceeds from the dinner will support Slow Food Northern New Jersey. The dinner starts at 4 p.m. on July 18. $155 per person.
