Running for Racehorses

June 25, 2010

By Brianne Harrison

You really can’t get an appreciation for something until you roll up your sleeves (or, in this case, lace up your sneakers) and do it yourself. Those who enjoy horse racing will have a unique opportunity to do just that this weekend at the Monmouth Park Racetrack during the second annual Monmouth Mile. The Mile is a one-mile run (or walk) around the Monmouth Park racetrack to raise money for ReRun, an organization that retrains and finds homes for thoroughbreds whose racing days are over.

The event, which will take place this Sunday, June 27, will start with the run at 11:30 and continue with special demonstrations by retired racers. Meet some of the thoroughbreds looking for homes, join in the special memorabilia sale, see some races (with horses, this time), and collect autographs from some of your favorite jockeys.

Registration is $20 for adults 18 years and older, $15 for kids. Preregistration is required. Visit monmouthpark.com to register. All participants will receive a t-shirt and free grandstand admission for themselves and their families. Giddy-up!

In other news…

I scream, you scream—or bark—for ice cream! St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center is hosting old-fashioned ice cream parlors throughout the summer to raise funds to support its homeless animals. Two-legged family members can gorge on Edy’s Grand ice cream and an assortment of toppings, while four-legged pals chow down on Frosty Paws and make some new friends. Admission is $5 per adult, $3 per child, $2 per dog (limit one dog per adult). Socials are held at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. 575 Woodland Ave., Madison every other Wednesday (the next one is schedule from July 7).
