Horsing Around

June 15, 2010

By Brianne Harrison

Ahh, polo. Sport of…future kings. And this Saturday, it can be the sport of anyone who feels like packing a tailgate picnic and heading to Hillsborough for the Greater New Jersey Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association’s 23rd annual Polo Classic.

The Polo Classic features world-class players duking it out at Hillsborough Country Club, along with a horse and hounds demonstration and the traditional stomping of the divits. Not so into the horsey aspect of the day? There’ll also be an antique and classic car display, hot air balloons, a closest-to-the-pin golf contest, and pony rides, face painting, and a trackless train for the younger audience members. There will also be a raffle for a four-night stay at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, Florida. Raffle tickets will be $5 each or $25 for a book.

If you’re feeling really creative, deck out your tent or car for the Best Tent and Best Tailgate competitions. In years past, themes have extended beyond the tent or the car to include participants’ clothes, props, and even food! The winning tent gets a special momento; the winning tailgate earns a free preferred parking pass for the 2011 Polo Classic.

The 2010 Polo Classic will be held at Hillsborough Country Club, 146 Wertsville Rd., Hillsborough. Gates open at 1 p.m.; the game starts at 3. Proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and the services it provides for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
