Strawberry Swig

Strawberry season is short but sweet, especially this year, but there are still places where you can score some of these delicious berries, whether you like to pick your own or grab a box at the farmer’s market.

I throw myself into strawberry season wholeheartedly and gobble them up whenever I get a chance. On a recent hot weekend, I decided to experiment, using strawberries I’d picked ourselves at the CSA farm I belong to, and some of the herbs growing in pots on my front porch. The results were refreshing, delicious, and low calorie—great for a summer afternoon drink or even a dessert!

Strawberry Basil Slushy

Serves 2

6-8 good-sized strawberries (more if you only have little ones)

Juice of 1 lemon

5-6 large basil leaves

2 tsp. sugar

Ice

Remove the tops from the strawberries and cut them in half. Add them to a blender or food processor, along with the basil leaves, lemon juice, and sugar and process about 10 seconds, until everything is crushed and mixed. Add the ice and process until it’s crushed and everything is combined. Taste and adjust as necessary—add a bit more sugar if it’s too sour, more basil if you want the herb flavor, etc.

Serve in chilled martini glasses, garnished with a basil leaf. If you’d like to thicken this and serve it as an iced dessert, add a few more ice cubes and serve immediately.

Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C (1 cup of strawberries gives you more than 130% of your recommended daily value!) and are also good sources of manganese and dietary fiber. They’re also a rich source of antioxidants and heart-protecting phenols. A study involving more than 110,000 men and women also found that eating three or more servings of fruits like strawberries per day may reduce your risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Basil, a relative of peppermint, is high in vitamin K and also provides iron, calcium, vitamin A, dietary fiber, manganese, magnesium, vitamin C, and potassium. The flavonoids in basil have been shown to protect cells and chromosomes from damage, and basil has also been shown to provide protection from bacteria.
