Loose Leashes

June 11, 2010

By Brianne Harrison

Check those calendars—Father’s Day is only about a week away! If you’re still stumped for a gift for a pet-loving pop, you might want to check out the quirky pet portraits by photographer and New Jersey native Ron Schmidt.

Schmidt and his wife, Amy, founded Loose Leashes photography in 2004 after receiving numerous compliments on their pet photos from family, friends, and clients. They now offer a lovely selection of humorous, adorable pictures. Since animal welfare is very near and dear to Schmidt’s heart, a portion of the proceeds from the business is donated to local animal shelters.

You can find playful pictures that feature a wide range of dog breeds at Looseleashes.com. Prints are available in sizes 8×10 (unframed), 12×15 or 16×20 (framed). You can also get prints signed by the artist himself.

In Other News…

June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month, and two upcoming events hope to help find homes for some sweet kitties.

On Saturday (raindate Sunday), the twin towns of Lambertville and New Hope host Zoom Cat Zoom!, a poetry and art walk to support Tabby’s place, a cat sanctuary in Ringoes. Participants will receive a pamphlet of poetry from Lewis Matheney’s book, Zoom Cat Zoom, and a map that will lead them on a walking tour of the two towns. Walkers will match poetry with pieces of art they find in stores in both towns. Participants will receive a goody bag as well as complimentary food and drinks. The walks can be taken any time between 3 and 6 p.m. and start at Left Bank Books, 32 Coryell St., Lambertville. If you’re feeling particularly generous, donation bins for items Tabby’s Place needs will be available.

On June 25, Morris Animal Inn will host a reading and booksigning with local author Kristin Elliott, who will read from her children’s book In Sneakers: The Munchkin Cat Whose Every Day was an Adventure. A dollar from the sale of each book will be donated to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. Morris Animal Inn is also offering a $50 gift certificate to those who adopt a cat during the month and present their adoption documentation through September 15. To reserve a spot at the reading, call 973.539.0377.
