Women and Children First

May 18, 2010

By Brianne Harrison

Although Mother’s Day was a couple of weeks ago now, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t continue to celebrate women and kids and continue to promote their health, happiness, and wellbeing. Luckily, this weekend, there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

First up, at the Designer Showhouse of New Jersey, is the Maureen Fund Garden Party on Thursday evening. The Maureen Fund for Ovarian Cancer promotes prevention, early detection, and finding a cure for the disease. Guests can enjoy light refreshments, a tour of the house, and special guest appearances by theater producer Wendy Federman and publisher Kate Kelly Smith. Proceeds benefit the Maureen Fund.

Join an interactive discussion and learn how to promote wellness and optimize your children’s health at An Evening for the Whole Child on Friday from 7-9 p.m. Discover healthy eating ideas, and learn more about vaccines and green living.

Catch a screening of “The Heretics,” a film that charts the story of the feminist art collective, Heresies, and check out the Art-Bra displays featuring inspirational pieces made by local art students to raise breast cancer awareness during a two-day event celebrating women and supporting those affected by breast cancer. The art bras will be auctioned off to raise money for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The event is Friday from 7-8:50 p.m. and Saturday from 6-8:15 p.m. Friday tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door; Saturday tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Choose from 1.5-, 2-, and 5-mile walks at the Walk ‘n’ Roll to Benefit Children’s Specialized Hospital on Saturday. The course is wheelchair accessible and the event will be followed by a free family-friendly Kohl’s KidsAbilities Carnival, featuring games, prizes, food, and resources for children with special needs.

Learn how your whole family can live a greener, more sustainable life at GreenFest on Saturday. The event will feature sustainable living demonstrations, healthy food, and local music as well as over 75 different vendors. Kids can join in sustainable living games, contests, face painting, and pony rides.

Let your kids play chef for the day (and learn about healthy eating) at Wholesome Kids Cook on Saturday. Children ages 3-6 will use all natural and organic ingredients to whip up a healthy meal, followed by playtime in the activity center. Visit for more information.

Finally, join Ronald McDonald for the 4th Annual Statewide Walk with Ronald event at Six Flags Great Adventure on Sunday. Pre-registered walkers will receive a tee shirt, a chance to meet Ronald, and free admission to select rides before park opening. Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald Houses in New Jersey.
