Getting Out

May 4, 2010

By Brianne Harrison

I don’t know about you, but the return of warm weather wants me to spend every available second I have outside. This weekend offers plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the springtime, and if you’re a music lover, you’re really in luck!

Things kick off Friday with a Live Concert Under the Stars at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes, featuring U2 tribute band Unforgettable Fire as well as some excellent food. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Matthew Larson Brain Tumor Foundation. For more information, visit ironmatt.org.

Interested in giving back to nature? You might want to stop by the Heirloom Plant Sale at Morven in Princeton on Saturday. The theme for this year’s event is Birds, Bees, and Butterflies, and you’ll find more than 100 types of hard-to-find heirloom and connoisseur plants, including nectar and host plants for butterflies and flowers that attract hummingbirds—it’s the perfect chance to pick up a last-minute gift for mom! You can also attend a workshop Saturday at 11 a.m. during which Morven’s gardener Pam Ruch will demonstrate how to design a container that will attract butterflies. For more info, visit morven.org.

Celebrate two wheels and live music at the Classic Bikes and Bluegrass Festival in Frenchtown on Saturday. Head in for a day of classic bikes, shopping, and, of course, music! The event is hosted by Art of the Bike. Visit artofthebike.com for more information.

Raise money for a good cause and help yourself get in shape for the summer by running in the Seventh Annual Riker Danzig Newport, Jersey City 10K. The challenging course, which attracts more than 750 runners, makes racers work for the $12,000 in prize money! After the race, kick back and enjoy music, refreshments, and special drawings from Newport’s boutiques and restaurants. Proceeds benefit the Jersey City Medical Center. For more information, e-mail awoods@mww.com.

And finally, celebrate mom and America’s favorite pastime by joining the Mother’s Day brunch and baseball with the Somerset Patriots on Sunday. This annual event, which raises awareness for breast cancer, will take place at TD Bank Ball Park in Bridgewater. Brunch is 12-2 p.m. and the game starts at 1:35. Visit somersetmedicalcenter.com for more information.
