Better Spirits

April 15, 2010

Even when I buy beer and wine, I always look for local, organic brands made by small companies. Thanks to many micro breweries and New York vineyards, they’re easy to find here in New Jersey. But spirits are usually another story…until now! I just came across this amazing vodka made by the Phillips Distilling Company, a fifth-generation, family-owned maker of distilled spirits. Their Prairie Organic Vodka is crafted in partnership with a co-op of over 900 Minnesota farmers that provide them with ingredients that are completely free of chemical pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified seeds, and artificial fertilizers or enzymes. They even use renewable energy for the distillers!

“Prairie represents the intersection of a luxury spirit with organic and kosher distillation methods complemented by a profound respect for the people and place that make it possible,” says Dean Phillips, fifth-generation president and CEO of Phillips Distilling Company. “This brand symbolizes a meaningful departure from the business practices of yesterday – from the sharing of success with farmers to converting leftover corncobs to biogas for powering the stills, we are proud to be charting new territory.”

I cannot wait to try their Prairie Chaitini!

Prairie Chaitini (100% organic martini)

1 part Prairie Organic Vodka

2 parts Original Oregon Chai

1 part Vanilla Silk Soymilk

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with sprinkled nutmeg and enjoy!
